Opinion: “a belief, judgment, or way of thinking about something; what someone thinks about a particular thing; advice from someone with special knowledge; advice from an expert” (Merriam-Webster)
“A smart man thinks he knows everything; a wise man knows he knows nothing.”
I also like the saying: “Opinions are like armpits; everyone has them and most of them stink!” The key here is that these are my opinions; they are not necessarily fact, but are presented in a calm, intelligent manner, hoping for calm, intelligent discourse. In some cases, all I have is what I think about something; sorry if it doesn’t jive with what you think.
There is a shortage of good, solid history on the four-string banjo, so in some cases I’ve had to fill in the blanks and/or make educated guesses. I would never have the arrogance to suggest that I know everything; I go out on a limb in the hopes of someday learning everything, and only then taking over the world. I ask that you keep this in mind when you get ready to tear me apart.
There is also a severe shortage of actual, truthful criticism in the banjo world (“the place where everyone stars”). If you have read me in BMG magazine, you know that I don’t pull punches; how else can we grow as a society? In exchange, I welcome criticism of my efforts (note: I much prefer constructive criticism over bullying); how else can I grow as a musician and commentator?
A bit of “How dare you?” and “This guy is an idiot!” is expected of course; even the happy-go-lucky banjo world has its trolls. I reserve the right to pre-approve and/or remove ugly comments from trolls (it is my website after all!), but hey, if they make you look like an idiot, I may just post them and leave them up for the fun of it! Having said that, if you prove that I have genuinely misstated something (and that won’t be too hard to do sometimes), or I inadvertently hurt someone’s feelings, I will be quick to apologize and remove the offending material myself.
At any rate, if you don’t say anything, than no discussion of any kind—intelligent or otherwise—will be generated, so please, comment away (and I’ll get back with you ASAP)! I thank you in advance for your participation and proven maturity.
